Andrew and I had been scheming to do the Wildcats on skis for a long time going down the backside on the Wildcat Valley Trail. Though the approach from the Wildcat Ridge is spectacular, just having the option to ski down makes all the difference.

We began at the ski resort and asked the people who worked there if we could use the skin track to go up. They said we could, but you should always think to ask before going lest you get kicked off. Quite frankly the people we talked to didn't seem to know or care either way. Check with them for fees–and also, check with Jackson XC center for possible fees to use the Wildcat Valley trail as well.

We followed the Polecat Trail up the Designated Uphill Route, although we did cut onto a steeper trail at one point before meeting back up. It was quick tour to the top, and only took us a little ..

We quickly tagged the summit–for my 3rd 48 finish, no less–and then found the start of the trail a little to the right of the medical hut. You know you are in the right place when you see a sign saying that this is the Wildcat Valley Trail.





It was damn cold, well below freezing with the windchill, so we quickly grabbed a snack and began our ski. Our hands were cold, but so were our noses, which doesn't happen often to me!

The skiing was incredible. There was a lot more uphill than we expected but we didn't mind because it kept us warm. And we got on the trail before a ton of people had skied it out, so turns were to be had on the steeper sections. We are actually thankful someone tracked out the flat portions so we could go a little faster.

The famous glade section was well worth it, but a lot shorter than either of us would have wanted. Everything goes by so much faster when you're on skis!

We followed the Wildcat Valley Trail signs most of the way down with the exception of taking the Beth Hendrick Trail to get some steeper skiing in.


We found our car spot at the trailhead off Carter Notch Road, quite satisfied with the short, albeit very fun ski. And we got a 4000 footer to boot!

If this post is eerily similar to one I posted not even a few months ago, it's because I hiked Flume and Liberty twice in a 6 week span. I'm not sick of it yet, because of views like these.

I was joined by Erin and Jon, and it was a frigid day that never reached 20. It was likely close to 0 with a wind chill up on the summit that day. We had snowshoes on all day, but many of the people we saw that day didn't. After the freeze thaw this week microspikes may be sufficient.

Of the times I have done these peaks, I had only done them from the White House Trail once before. Quite frankly, I don't like the approach since it's more windy than just taking the bike path, but in the winter it dodges some of the sketchy blind corners where snowmobiles rip through.

We steadily climbed our way up to the Franconia Ridge through good conversation. The snow was soft and we were happy we had our snowshoes.

The saddle between the peaks is always a drag, but it went by pretty quick given that the snow was so soft and we didn't have to deal with rocks. All in all, a lovely day in the hills!
