Guadalupe Peak is the state highpoint of Texas. At approximately 8750' feet, it's not the tallest or the most intense by any means. But it is a desert giant. If only due to the sheer ruggedness and drama portrayed by adjacent El Capitan, it is one of the most recognizable peaks in the South. There is a classic photo of El Capitan that can be seen on SummitPost HERE, and you'll see what I mean.

To that effect, El Capitan is the more dramatic of the peaks, but it also does not have a trail to the summit contrary to the confusing nature of the signs. There is an El Capitan Trail, but it does not take you to the top. I'll detail the El Capitan approach later in this post.

To that effect, El Capitan is the more dramatic of the peaks, but it also does not have a trail to the summit contrary to the confusing nature of the signs. There is an El Capitan Trail, but it does not take you to the top. I'll detail the El Capitan approach later in this post.

The approach to Guadalupe Peak, however, is beautiful. Thankfully with the early start, I was able to dodge the sunny parts of the climb for much of the day. It was cool and breezy for the majority of the day until I returned back to the car on the final stretch.

The trail is easy to follow and climbs up a series of switchbacks for around 1000 feet or more before it starts to level out.

There are a few, wild exposed portions that you have to navigate.

But overall, the 4.5 mile climb up to the summit is quite benign. I was feeling the altitude a little bit more than I expected, but that'll happen when you're not acclimatized, even to 8000 feet. The first views of El Capitan below do not do justice to just how wild of a mountain it is.

But the summit views on Guadalupe were pleasant, and the wind was howling.

But now, the fun began. All Trails has a description of a bushwhack over to El Capitan from Guadalupe. And its a whack alright. You basically navigate back down several hundred feet until you find a good path leading down. The objective is to stay to the left in the picture below, descending as far as you can without dropping down too much. Eventually you will see a drainage/gully of sorts on the right, and you want to trend toward that.

After getting into the gully, you follow it until you reach the saddle between the peaks, and then pick the line of least resistance. I decided to scramble up some class 2/3 moves just to keep it interesting. I was super tired by this point, and clearly not acclimatized.

The views of El Capitan's dramatic cliffs began to emerge, along with an amazing view of Guadalupe looking back. Suddenly, the clouds began to roll through the notch between the peaks, and I couldn't see the summit at all anymore.

But let me tell you. This was one of the coolest summit ridge traverses I had ever been on, especially given that I was the only one up there. It's not a hike that is done often relative to the amount of people who frequent the area.

I followed a faint herd path basically all the way to the summit once I gained the ridge proper. There were some cacti to dodge and trees to whack through, but nothing serious.

My return trip back was tiring. Once I reached the saddle again, I took a different route that caught back up with the trail proper at a lower point. A mistake I have read people doing in the past is trying to descend from the saddle. BAD IDEA. You will cliff out. Instead, you take the hiker's right path up and follow that until you regain the trail. But you do have to go back up the mountain to get there. I suggest finding a GPS track to guide you.

The run back on the trail was quick, and I was happy to be down. Guadalupe Peak itself was a fun hike, but the day was even more memorable because of the inclusion of El Capitan. I wouldn't recommend the bushwhack for the faint of heart. It is involved. But it was totally worth it.

Sharing the trail

L and I drove optimistically to the trailhead. I hadn't seen her in two years, courtesy of Covid, so we were chatting away as we approached the end of the rough road. We had already passed a few cars parked inexplicably along the side of the road, and a tent parked so close that our tires came within inches of where someone's sleeping head would be. All of this should have clued us in, but we still gasped in horror as the parking lot came into view.
Generally, this remote trailhead on a busy day would have about four cars. Today, at least twenty were packed in there. We exchanged looks of disbelief. It didn't look like my truck would fit, but we were locals, we could do it! Leaving the horse trailer plenty of room to get out, I backed precariously to a spot that probably was not really a spot, and we began our day hike.
The first hiker we encountered was headed out, bearing an external frame pack and a scowl. He ignored our greeting. Clearly he was not having a good day…

Clearly he was not having a good day. We then saw a hunter (archery season is upon us) and a few backpackers, both headed in and headed out. A couple was doing a 14 mile loop, and there were also some day hikers. Finally I could stand it no longer and asked one group how they had heard about the trail.

"There was an article in the Eugene Register Guard," they said.

Boom, there it was. Write about something in a high circulation format, and people come.

On the positive side, it is always good to see people enjoying the outdoors. Everyone we saw, except for Grouchy Guy, was having a good time. We could see why. The lake was beautiful in the fall, the shrubs turning yellow and red. This is the best time of year in the mountains (it's supposed to snow this weekend).

We debated going further, but decided against it. The day was perfect enough already. When we arrived back at the trailhead, someone with a horse trailer had given up and decided to park in the middle of the lot, effectively causing difficulty to others. The tent was still pitched in the road, the occupants apparently deciding to risk their lives. It was hard to get too mad at all the people. Winter will be here soon, and everyone will go away.

I don't often enjoy day hikes as much as I do backpacking, but this one, even with sharing the trail, was the perfect length and the perfect company. We talked about the date, September 11, and where we were when we heard (L was at these lakes) and how life had changed since then. It was the right place to be on this anniversary.

Indian Head is probably the most famous peak with the most famous view in the Adirondacks. Everyone knows the classic view of the Ausable sharply wedged through two huge mountains. Lauren and I were joined by her family for the easy approach in on the AMR easement. Unfortunately there are reservations required in the summer/fall months and they're a lot stricter than they used to be. But we were able to secure a midweek reservation with ease.

The approach is effortless, with some elevation gain along the easy graded dirt road over to Ausable Lake. We went down to the dam area to get some excellent views before taking the trail for Indian Head and Fish Hawk Cliffs.

The trail gets steep at this point, but it's still quite moderate. There are some scrambly sections and sections with ladders and ledges. It's a fun, albeit awfully eroded approach.

The view of the Gothics was insane from the Gothic Window viewpoint.

And we continued along with ladders and ledges up to the outlook from the Indian Head ledges. The true summit heads back along the trail to complete the loop.

Of course, this is one of the best views in the Dacks. And for good reason. We had it completely to ourselves for almost 30 minutes–a complete anomaly. Don't expect that when you go.

Instead of heading back the way we came or going down to Fish Hawk Cliffs, we continued along the ridge up to the true summit and took the trail past an outlook and back to the AMR easement/road.

But not before we saw a wonderful waterfall that Lauren and I had gone by once before on the way down from Blake and Colvin in the pitch black. It was nice to see it in the flesh!

There is no better introduction to the Adirondacks than Indian Head. It truly captures all of the beauty and mystique of this rugged and beautiful range. Just make sure you go during the week to avoid the crowds!
