We interrupt regularly scheduled programming…

I want to tell you about my hike (spoiler alert, I panic packed too many warm clothes and ended up carrying them down 5000 feet and back up again unworn) but two things have happened which I wanted to mention.
One, my new book came out! I wrote it in 2017, so it is kind of strange for it to be “new” (publishing takes forever!) and I am not sure I would have written it today. But here we are. I feel the usual mix of terror and excitement: for a relatively private person, I'm not sure why I put myself out there so much in my writing. I'm not one to yap about my life to strangers. But once again: here we are.
I'm not writing this to push sales; buy it if you want, don't if it doesn't sound interesting. It's just a big milestone that I am proud of achieving. I recall many tourists asking me on my nature walks in national parks what my degree was in. “English,” I said hesitantly. Cue the snarky laugh. “What are you going to do with THAT?” So there, tourists.

Second, J tore his Achilles skiing. Unfortunately, the Achilles is not something that heals quickly. Which means that my summer will be a much different one than I planned. I had planned to stay local, but to continue backpacking every weekend. With three dogs to exercise, someone to caretake, and two tiny houses to deal with, that probably won't be happening. I am trying to see the bright side of this but since our short alpine summer is what makes going to work worth it, it is looking pretty grim. Of course, I'm not the one who has to deal with the rehab and the annoyance of not being able to hike, bike ride, and everything else, so there is that.

Tell me something good to brighten my day!

White Oak Trail (Holden, MA)

Buy my new novel Take to the Unscathed Road now! Follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
The White Oak Trail is a beautiful property tucked in a quiet part of Holden which is contiguous to the Trout Brook Reservation. These trails eluded me for many years but are only about 15 minutes from me at my new place. I was able to link a 5 mile run using the entire White Oak Trail with the blue trail in Trout Brook.

The White Oak Trail is a loop, so you can either start it from the parking lot side or right across the road. It's somewhat confusing, as the trail map shows the road as being part of the loop. Technically you can go this way and make the loop using the road, but you can also cut into the Trout Brook Trails to make a longer loop, which I did. This section of the trail pops you right out onto the Blue Trail which loops back to the parking lot. But I'll get to that later.

I started across the street from the lot. The trail had great footing and was perfect for trail running. There were some eroded and muddy sections, but nothing crazy.

The Spring foliage was budding early. And surprisingly the trail had some decent elevation gain.

When I reached the road section, instead of heading to the car, I turned around and took a left, did a short loop as seen on the map, and then continued along the dotted trail. This trail eventually meets up with the blue trail, which you can follow back to another yellow trail after the big swampy section. It's a sharp left, but it takes you directly back to the parking lot. I would highly recommend this loop to any locals to Central MA!

Pulpit Rock Conservation Area (New Hampshire)

Buy my new novel Take to the Unscathed Road now! Follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
There aren't many natural places in New Hampshire that I don't know about. But Pulpit Rock Conservation Area eluded me for far too long. It's merely an hour from central Mass and is 100% worth the trip even if you spend more time driving there than actually hiking or running it.

There are several miles worth of trails to explore, but the highlight is the Ravine Trail, which explores an actual ravine with plenty of waterfalls to go around. This is most definitely an area to explore in the Spring when the water is flowing.

I started on the Kennard Trail to the Landry Trail and quickly navigated my way down the ravine after checking out the tallest waterfall in the trail system.

The Ravine Trail was one of the most gorgeous trails I have been on outside of the mountains in New England. A beautiful river of multiple falls and scenic bridge crossings lay before me. The running was tricky but doable.

The Ravine Trail hits a four way junction and I continued along the gravel Gage's Mill Trail before turning around near the parking lot. I then headed down the Pulpit Brook Trail which continues much further but I turned around and headed back to the Tufts Trail to complete my loop, as it was getting dark.

The Tufts Trail had much easier footing than the Ravine Trail and it was a perfect way to complete my run. If you haven't been to this area, GO. My only suggestion is to go during off hours because I imagine it gets busy. I was there on a 33 degree April day and was completely alone.
