In a last second decision to go somewhere on my days off, I picked Phoenix. It's a place I haven't been in almost six years. I have friends and family there. And it's warm in winter. Although a ski trip would have been equally nice, I have the entire winter and spring to plot out snowy trips.
My buddy Aaron, who I met on my first cross country road trip, took me up Piestewa Peak, the second tallest of the Phoenix Mountains behind Camelback. It's a short 3 mile round trip from the trailhead we took, which is essentially in someone's backyard.
The hike was slippery due to the rain that had just blanketed the area. On several occasions going up it began to drizzle again. We could see perfectly even without headlamps due to the light from the city.
We hit the summit after a short sketchy scramble about 45 minutes after starting. It was a perfect way to commence my adventures in Phoenix!
